Derby Days ΣΧ
The purpose of Derby Days is philanthropic in nature. This weeklong event is scheduled from April 5, 2010 to April 10, 2010. Every year Sigma Chi chapters internationally hosts an annual Sigma Chi “Derby Days,” this weeklong of events and festivities are designed to create a fun, competitive, and successful philanthropic event. It is in the sincere hope of the Sigma Chi Beta Xi chapter that the women of each sorority at the University of New Mexico, will choose to participate in “Derby Days.”
The Beneficiary of this year’s fundraising drive is the Huntsman Cancer Institute, Sigma Chi’s International partner.
The brothers of Sigma Chi are responsible for event planning and setting up fundraising. With that in mind Sigma Chi openly solicit input, in the form of idea generation, or other ideas that will make this year’s Derby Days a great success, but more importantly fun for all.
About Huntsman
Mission Statement
Huntsman Cancer Institute’s mission is to understand cancer from its beginnings, to use that knowledge in the creation and improvement of cancer treatments, to relieve the suffering of cancer patients, and to provide education about cancer risks, prevention, and care.
The mission of Huntsman Cancer Institute combined groundbreaking research and state-of-the art patient care with the offering of hope and support for cancer patients and their families. Our teams of research scientists, medical professionals, and cancer educators are working to understand cancer, improve treatments, and help patients fight their disease. Former Huntsman Cancer Foundation President, Jon Huntsman, Jr., “it is the goal of Huntsman Cancer Institute to become a symbol of hope and optimism. We want those carrying the heavy burden of cancer to strengthened and hopeful.”
History
Salt Lake has become one of the foremost regions in the world for genetic and medical research due to its unique resource of large and close families with detailed genealogical records living in a relatively small area. These families, along with the cooperation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (The Mormon Church), have provided physicians and researchers at huntsman Cancer Institute with the tools they need to investigate the genetic pathways of cancer and to create new ways to prevent, diagnose, treat, and cure cancer. Huntsman Cancer Institute has become a reality thanks to the generous support of the Jon M. Huntsman family, which pledged $151 million in 1995-$100 million directly from family funds- to create a world-class cancer center. This institute bears their name and their vision of hope for all who are burdened with cancer. Huntsman Cancer Institute is an extraordinary legacy for the children of this community and this nation.
Week’s Schedule
Monday April 5, 2010
We will kick off the week with the penny wars. Penny wars will start on Monday this will give each team the chance to raise as much as possible before the rest of the events begin on Wednesday.
Penny Wars- The object of this is to raise as much change as possible. Each team will be given two official Penny War Jars. These jars are going to be located on campus taking donations, it is strongly encouraged for each sorority to stop by these and donate!
Wednesday April 7, 2010
Sign-A-Sig, Donation Dinner, Derby Snatch
Derby Snatch- Duration: All day or until all derbies have been collected
The object of the day is to collect as many Derbies from Sigma Chi Brothers and Pledges. Every member’s derby will be worth a certain number of points (which has yet to be decided) depending on their position in the chapter, officers and older members will be worth more points. This is meant to be a fun activity for both sides (team members and Sigma Chi derby holders). The point is to try and persuade each Sigma Chi to give you their derby (which would clearly not be anything degrading/derogatory to both sides), this is not an opportunity to tackle, maul, and harass every derby holder.
Sign-A-Sig- Duration: All Day
Each Sigma Chi Brother should be wearing a plain white T-Shirt and carrying a permanent marker. It is the object for each team to find as many brothers as possible throughout the day and sign their shirts, each team member’s signature counts as points, so every member should try to sign as many shirts as possible. Sign with Name and House Letters
Donation Dinner- Time: 6:00
This is a great opportunity to get all teams and Sigma Chi brothers together in the middle of the week to socialize and dine for proceeds. Last year’s location was Fuddruckers, every meal that was purchased under “Sigma Chi Derby Days” helped to proceed the fundraising (50% of each meal went towards that fund). This year’s location will again be at the Fuddruckers on Yale and Gibson.
Thursday April 8, 2010
