Our hallowed fraternity was founded by seven men in 1855 at the University of Miami (Ohio).
Sigma Chi opened a UNM Chapter 27 years after the founding of UNM in 1889. The Chapter house was located at Central Ave and Terrace. Three original founding members of Sigma Chi were still living at that time.
On July 9th, 1928, 12 short years after the start of the Beta Xi Chapter of Sigma Chi Chapter, a number of Sigma Chi Alumni headed by Brother Rodey, had the vision and opportunity to purchase the old Albuquerque Country Club building which included 3 AC of land.
This land is depicted on the old aerial photographic images posted to the history page of the Alumni web site www.abqex.comThe property went from Las Villagras (Now Yale Blvd), extending west about an 1/8th of a mile with the south boundary being Las Lomas (originally known as Lomas), then extended north to an area just north of what we know as Lomas now. See the aerial images.
The Alumni apparently had a vision to permanently locate the Chapter house on this property as it was across the street from the University President’s home. The University was still relatively young and growing rapidly.
The Beta Xi chapter, unfortunately lost its Charter in 2001 as a result of the actions of a few brothers. Beta Xi has a long, rich history at the University of New Mexico, with over a thousands members, that will surely continue.
Beta Xi, after more than a four year waiting period, was allowed to undertake the recolonization challenge.
The Colony worked extremely hard to meet and exceed all standards set forth by Sigma Chi International to earn its Charter back. The former Colony members had certainly earned the right to become Brothers of Sigma Chi when they were installed on Saturday morning, November 15, 2008. The Chapter is in is 3rd full semester as a Chapter. The next big mission is to find Chapter housing. Until that time, the Chapter continues to meet in the Sub for weekly meeting and continues to excell in all their multiple activities. The Chapter is always looking for out standing young men who want an atmosphere to live to a higher standard.
